What is Witchcraft? What is Wicca? How do I perform witchcraft?
You may be asking these questions and more... Witchcraft is simply the
spellcraft of the nature ways, healing and herbs, faery and folk, passing on
wisdom that works, walking the wild ways and learning from nature all
around.
Some
witches choose Wicca as their religion, their way of worshipping the Old
Ones in a group into which they have been initiated or through learning from
published material and working on their own following a self-dedication to
the tradition and its beliefs and practices. Not all witches are Wiccan, nor
are all witches religious. Wicca is an Earth-based, Nature focused
spirituality, drawing on the beliefs and practices of pantheism, gnosticism,
ceremonial magick, witchcraft and the pagan religions of the old worlds.
Wicca is an traditionally an initiatory Tradition, and can work solitary or
in a group called a Coven, which can be a small group of two or as big as 13
or more. Wiccans believe in a Goddess & God and celebrate the union between
them. Wiccans also perform their ceremonies in a *circle* and work closely
with the four elements. Wiccans meet to celebrate the eight Sabbats (witch
holidays) and often also celebrate at the monthly Full Moon.
Witches
work magick according to personal preference, sometimes solitary and at
other times with kindred spirits like Faeries.
For each
witch, the Craft is something slightly different. A personal relationship
with nature, which may include deities, angels, guardian spirits and other
creatures such as faeries, dragons, mermaids and the like.
In my
opinion if you practice Witchcraft then you can call yourself a Witch. Being
a Witch is a lifestyle not something to be taken lightly. It is a commitment
for life. If you are just starting out and learning about the ways of
Witchcraft it is best to describe yourself as someone with an interest in
Witchcraft - until such time that you start practicing seriously.
A good
starting place is reading my Wicca 101 Book
recommendations, acquiring some
basic supplies and signing up for a good Online Witch School in order to get valuable feedback and a structured
learning system. Once you learn the basics, you can then branch out
into other magickal systems such as Faery, Dragon, Egyptian, Druid, Celtic,
Green, Moon and more.
